Description

Rediscover the Secrets of Mother Earth

The Tolba Trail is a unique opportunity to explore W8banaki culture in harmony with the natural environment. Numerous interpretive panels provide insights into the culture, as well as the local wildlife, flora, and history.

Located in the forested area bordering the Saint-François River, this trail is accessible to everyone, free of charge, year-round. Its entrance is situated at the Musée des Abénakis, and since the trail’s enhancement, you can now traverse a 5 km loop that meanders through either the village or the forest.

The trail is open year-round, including winter, and is suitable for walking (the trail is relatively flat, so snowshoes are not necessary). However, we advise walkers and snowshoers to avoid the trail at sunrise and sunset and to wear high-visibility vests or bright colors to ensure safety for hunters who use the area from September to January. While there are no hunting blinds directly on the trail, it is always better to be cautious.

During the summer, it is important to use a good insect repellent due to the nearby wetlands where biting insects thrive. Bringing binoculars for wildlife observation is also recommended.

Stroller Access : The Koak section (which has direct parking) is accessible for those with reduced mobility, including strollers. While strollers are not prohibited, the Tolba Trail, although not difficult, features roots, some minor elevation changes, and boardwalks. There is also a large staircase if starting from the museum (but you can easily start the trail from the bottom of the hill near the gazebo). Thus, it is manageable but not entirely flat.

Parking Note : The parking area at the bottom of the hill near the river and gazebo is not accessible in winter; please use the museum parking lot instead.

The creation of this trail was made possible with financial support from the Indigenous Species at Risk Fund of the Government of Canada, Tourism Quebec, and the Hydro-Québec Foundation for the Environment. Its extension in 2020 was supported by Economic Development Canada and the Indigenous Initiatives Fund III of the Quebec Secretariat for Indigenous Affairs.
